DAR and Constitution Week Exhibit

(view slideshow)

The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started

by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

(The Daughters of the American Revolution is an organization, established in 1890, open to women at least 18 years of age who can prove lineal bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving United States independence.    DAR is dedicated to promoting: Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism.)

2009 marks the 222nd anniversary of that important event.  Thirty-nine brave men signed the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.

In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated   for the observance of Constitution Week.   The resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

In honor of our U.S. Constitution, Judy Noland, D.A.R. member, is glad to make these Constitution Week displays, including some items donated by the St. Joseph Chapter of D.A.R.

THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES

Constitution Week – September 17th – 23rd

On September 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed by 55 delegates to the Constitutional    Convention in Philadelphia's Independence Hall. In honor of this historic event, President George W. Bush signed a proclamation on September 17, 2002, stating that September 17th through September 23rd be recognized as  constitution week.

In the proclamation he encouraged Federal, State, and local officials, as well as leaders of civic, social, and educational organizations, to conduct ceremonies and programs that celebrate our Constitution and reaffirm our commitment as citizens of our great Nation.
